One of Pei’s many planning projects in Singapore, Nathan Road Development Concept called for the creation of luxury housing on a former 12-acre estate in a park-like setting just outside the downtown. Responding to market demands, the project proposed an amenity-rich complex that was, at the time, new to Singapore, including sports and health clubs, recreational facilities, convenience shops, meeting rooms, community and other facilities, all to be housed in a centrally located 4-story podium that also provided indoor parking. Surrounding the podium were to be three 36-story residential towers – modified versions of Pei’s Helix of 1948 in which apartments step up in half-levels around a central core. Like the original prototype, these towers remained unbuilt.
