Miho Museum is located in a nature preserve about an hour and a world away from Kyoto, Japan. Visitors approach in a pilgrimage-like procession out of the busy city and back into the hills, climbing higher and deeper into sacred lands. Nearing the museum, still out of view, they pass through a mysterious tunnel of glowing stainless steel and then cross a breathtaking suspension bridge over a deep valley between two mountains. In the distance is the serene museum, largely recessed into the ground, completely at one with nature. Architecture is transcendent at Miho and takes on an almost spiritual dimension. It is among Pei’s most important buildings, arguably his best.
