Kips Bay Plaza is a landmark urban renewal project on a 3-city-block “superblock” in midtown Manhattan. It was Pei’s introduction to large-scale housing, the progenitor of nearly a dozen subsequent residential redevelopments, and the critical beginning of Pei’s development of cast-in-place architectural concrete. Pei built his firm on the success of Kips Bay.
