The commission to design a small under-funded museum in a bleak urban renewal area of what was considered a cultural backwater in upstate New York ended up being the greatest opportunity of I.M. Pei’s newly independent career. With no real program and no collection to design for, Pei had the freedom to explore. For the first time, he discovered space and form: the art of architecture.
