Residence replica in Shanghai

In 1974, I.M. Pei purchased a four-story residence on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Since the house was designed for Pei’s own use, it gives great insight into his personal style and modernist aesthetic.

Pei and his wife Eileen occupied the house from 1972 onwards. It was an important place for family and friends to socialize and communicate. It was here that the architect lived until his death in May 2019, aged 102.

He made extensive renovations, creating light-drenched interiors with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Sutton Square Gardens and a striking spiral staircase crowned by a geometric skylight. Many of Pei’s greatest works were created in his home studio.

In honor of I.M. Pei, the Foundation is reproducing the spirit of his New York residence in Shanghai’s historical and cultural district. Continuing the communal experience of socializing and communicating, the house will provide the perfect venue for exhibitions, concerts, and lectures. I.M. Pei’s spatial language will inspire the interior and its selection of materials and furnishings.
